Money Exchange

The most common foreign currency and easiest to exchange to CR colones is the US Dollar. In some extent, the US$ now is a kind of a second currency in the country. In December 2003 you received 415 colones for 1 US$.


Museums and Atractions in San José


INBioparque
An impressive 2 ˝ hour guided tour to get initiated to CR Nature and biodiversity.


Gold Museum
Beneath the Plaza de la Cultura. A unique collection of 5,000 pre-Columbian gold pieces in a renovated presentation. One of the three most important in America.


Jade Museum
Newly reopened with its exceptional collection of pre-Columbian artifacts and jewels found in the country.


National Museum
The former Bellavista Barrack houses the CR National Museum which tells the history of the formation of the CR culture through archaeological, historical and religious collections.


National Theater
Inaugurated in 1897 and financed by coffee growers and traders, it is a jewel and symbol of the whole Nation. Decorated by European artists and CR craftsmen.


CENAC
Former National Liquor Factory (or FANAL) built in 1853 now home to 2 theaters and the Museum of Contemporary Art & Design.


Shopping and night life
San Pedro, Santa Ana and Escazú (also famous for its witches...).


Children's Museum

Inserted into a former jail, the Children's Museum. Aim: "teach the Child not to have to punish the Man".


Coffee Tour de Café Britt

A prize-winning professional show explaining the whole cycle of coffee production with over 10,000 performances and still going strong.

Government Sales Tax (Impuesto de Ventas) is of 13%.

Security
As in every country, basic security measures should be taken. Ask your Security Passport at your hotel or at the Government Tourist Information Centers (Ministry of Tourism / ICT).

Service Charge
A 10% Service Charge is automatically added to your bill in bars and restaurants for the waiters. Tips are so fully optional.
