We
Costa Rican citizens are known as ticas or ticos. Thence the world Tiquicia
to designate our country.
We think we are kind and friendly. We are "Pura Vida". But we
take our time for everything. We like to control the Time. Not that the
Time controls us. That is why our feeling of punctuality is more flexible
than in Northern cultures. In other words, we know very well how to take
it easy… That is part of our Latin character you will easily notice with
your first steps out of the air terminal: some noise and disorder but
also smiles and abrazos. It is possible that our all year round mild climate
shaped us that soft, easy-going and indolent way.
But when we think of our tropical sun and many pristine beaches, we suddenly
click another disk and change our mood. We remember our European blood
is sometimes a kind of a mixture with Afro-Caribbean and Chinese. So,
as an example, our cuisine has received many influences even if we often
forget our potential variety.
We are proud to protect (both Government and private) as much as 27% of
our territory as a reserve for the Mankind, striving to act with sustainable
practices for our tourism industry.
As a 100% independent publishing and tourism company, we have designed
the present Guide for your enjoyment and convenience while visiting our
country following a number of Routes.

Our general map of CR shows the Routes we have established through the
country hopefully with pleasant, clear and freely inspired descriptions
in order to help you to realize all what you can see and do on our roads.
In addition, our Routes bear specific colors, each one corresponding to
a specific theme or interest, so that it is easier for you to identify
them.

International tourism started in CR 50 years ago when researchers, scientists
and students mainly from N countries visited our tropical forests aiming
at investigating its extremely rich and unique flora and fauna, among
other items. Later in the past century these visitors started to become
a real tourist market for the Country, growing bigger and bigger with
the advent of a brother segment: the ecotourism. CR tourism is now promoted
under a wider concept summed up by the slogan "No artificial ingredients",
partly responsible for reckoning 1,2 million arrivals in 2002. The tourism
sector now goes in hand with sustainability of our general economic development,
with such initiatives as the Tourism Sustainability Certificate (CST)
for accommodations with good environmental practices, the Ecological Blue
Flag Prize for the best beaches and communities, etc. And 27% of our territory
under some sort of protection. Please allow us to count on you to help
us to go strongly towards sustainable tourism and respect our People and
Nature for future generations.
